Lionel Messi wins his sixth Ballon D'or, setting an absolute record

Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi has won the 2019 FIFA Ballon d'Or.

The award ceremony took place last night in Paris. Messi won Ballon d'Or for the first time since 2015 and for the sixth time in his career. The Argentinean player became the record holder for the number of awards he is holding.

In the fight for the award, the Argentinean outpaced Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who were in the top three.

Previously, Messi received the prize in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015. With the current win Messi bypassed Ronaldo, who has five " Ballon d'Or".

In 2019, the Argentinean forward scored 46 goals and gave 17 goal assists in 54 games for Barcelona and Argentina. This year Messi was also recognized as the best FIFA football player in the world.
